13″ Rancor Prop Replica

This 13″ Rancor model was 3D printed from a model by Geosanmo. I printed the head, the upper body in two halves, the lower body, each leg, each arm, and each hand separately. After gluing together and filling with putty, and sanding, filling, sanding, etc, I coated it with a Tamiya fine primer it and prepared to paint.

Using mostly Vallejo Air and Liquitex acrylics, the painting began with a base coat of brown, followed by washes of a dark, sewar brown, then highlights with dry brushing. I painted the belly, inside hands and all the thin bits of flesh at the joints with a lighter brown. I then speckled the whole model in a dark brown to add grunge, and then stippled light brown all over, especially on the head, to add the illusion of more texture. Dark shadows were punched into the cracks and crevices to add scale.

The claws and teeth were based ivory with dark brown washes at the base and off white dry brushing at the edges. Then the entire piece was coated in a matte varnish.

The eyes and handcuff were painted silver and the cuff was stippled with oranges and reds for some subtle hints of rust, and washed with a dark ink, then sealed with clear gorilla glue to create the mirror finish. Gorilla glue was also applied liberally to the mouth area, claws, and spotted throughout in order to mimic the look of the glycerine used on the rod puppet when filming. A metal ear ring was added and locked in place with epoxy and also touched up with rust paint and clear glue for extra shine.

A drip of slobber was created by cutting a sliver of clear zip tie, creating a drip effect at the end with clear gorilla glue, and gluing it in place with super glue, then covering in clear gorilla glue to douse it in more “saliva.” The effect looks like fresh slobber, but is flexible and will not break. Clear gorilla glue was also run out the nose with a mixture of yellow-green acrylic to create the look of snot mixing with the slobber.
